The GED® Test (high school equivalency test) measures your knowledge and academic skills against those of today’s traditional high school graduates. It demonstrates your abilities to use and relate information at different levels.

GED Test Basics!!!

GED Test questions don't focus on memorizing facts, details or exact definitions. The test covers four areas:

  1. Mathematical Reasoning
  2. Reasoning through Language Arts
  3. Science
  4. Social Studies

Arizona Residents Test Requirement

  • To earn a high school equivalency diploma in Arizona, the Arizona Department of Education requires you to pass the Arizona Civics Test and the GED Test.
  • The AZ Civics Test is offered only in English. The GED Test is offered in English and Spanish in all United States jurisdictions. 
  • Completion of a GED® Test preparation class does not guarantee that a student will pass the GED® test.

Preparing for the GED Test

Test are offered throughout the state at Adult Education centers certified by the Arizona Department of Education. You can study in a classroom, with a tutor or from home through distance learning classes. Instruction is available at flexible times and locations.

GED.com includes materials to help adults with basic skills programs and computer skills training. It also features an Official GED® Practice Test.

The GED Test is offered at the following Pearson VUE-Authorized Rio Salado testing centers in the metro Phoenix area (hours vary by location):

  • Communiversity at Queen Creek
  • RSC Avondale
  • RSC Downtown
  • RSC Luke (Base Access Required)
  • RSC Northern
  • RSC Southern
  • RSC Surprise
  • RSC Tempe
  • RSC Thomas

Test Fees and Scheduling

GED Test fees and scheduling information: 

  1. Schedule a test time and site at ged.com, call Call 1-877-392-6433, or email Help@GEDTestingService.com
    • Rio Salado College has eight locations in metro Phoenix that are Pearson VUE-Authorized Rio Salado testing centers for taking this test. Testing at these sites is also scheduled at ged.com
  2. Pay for the GED® Test online at ged.com. Test fees are also listed on this site.
    • Only credit cards are accepted as payment 

On Test Day

Arrive 15-20 minutes before your scheduled test time. You may not be allowed to take the test if you arrive late at the test site. There are no refunds issued even if you are allowed to take the test past your scheduled test time.

You need to present valid form of identification (ID) at your scheduled testing site. Your ID must be a government-issued, original ID (not a copy).

Acceptable Types of Identification

Any one of the following forms of identification is accepted:

  • Current driver's license or government-issued identification card
  • Valid state ID
  • An Arizona ID card can be obtained through the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT)
  • Valid U.S. or foreign passport
  • Military ID
  • Other forms of government-issued ID:
    • Foreign, domestic, tribal
    • Current Matricula Consular Card (college)
      • ID must display your: Name, address, date of birth, signature and photograph

If you are 16 or 17 years old, you must also provide:

  • Official Withdrawal Form from your previous school, and
  • A Notarized Letter of Permission from a parent/guardian

There are four parts to the GED® Test. You do not have to take all four at the same time.

Scores

Initial test scores are available online at GED as soon as three-to-four hours and up to one business day after testing. If you pass the test, your diploma packet is mailed within two weeks.

Transcripts

After passing the GED® test, you will receive an Arizona High School Equivalency Diploma and an official transcript of your scores within two weeks of your tests being scored. Your Official Transcript is your ticket to college, vocational school, employment or the military. Your diploma is the official State of Arizona recognition of your accomplishment, so be sure to keep it with your other important papers.

Repeating Tests

If you do not pass the GED® test, you can retake it. In Arizona, there is no waiting period if you want to take it a second time. You can take the test again whenever you are ready. If you take the test three times and do not pass, you must wait 60 days after your last attempt before you can take it again.
