What is it?
The great poet Maya Angelou wrote "I long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever I find myself." It’s important to foster that spirit of belonging in our classrooms and workspaces. How can you feel free to work and grow if you don’t feel like you belong? Join Rio Salado on January 8 as we host a special event with Civic Cipher, a nationally syndicated radio show & podcast hosted by Q Ward and Ramses Ja.
Learn how you can self-advocate as a student and stay motivated as you work toward graduation. Hear tips on how you can help students feel a greater sense of belonging in the classroom. Our Civic Cipher guest speakers will be joined onstage by fellow Rio students and alumni who will share their own experiences about belonging.

About Civic Cipher
Civic Cipher's weekly broadcast is dedicated to empowering Black and Brown voices. Set in motion in early 2020 by the violent and egregious murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, Civic Cipher was created as a response to a desperate call to action and an urgent need for change. Q Ward and Ramses Ja are both DJs and radio personalities who've worked with organizations in radio, television, sports, music, and philanthropy.
The event is sponsored by Rio Salado’s The Avanzar Project. Rio Salado is helping students “move ahead” through this U.S. Department of Education Developing HSI Institutions Program Title V grant. By increasing student support through the development of Student Success Coaches and additional resources to students, Rio is working on a solution to ensure student belonging and success for underserved populations.
