On May 1, Rio Salado College celebrated with the Chancellor, administrators, faculty, employees, students and their loved ones all to honor recipients of the Chancellor’s Civic Leadership Medallion. The medallion is bestowed upon individuals who show exemplary commitment to civic engagement and leadership within their communities. Let’s take a moment to celebrate their remarkable achievements:

  1. Saffron Wells is a student who is passionate about Phi Theta Kappa and serves as VP of Fellowship. A position she serves well because it is grounded in maintaining relationships and encouraging scholarly fellowship, which is a strength she possesses. Saffron's dedication to service is unmatched, earning her the reputation of being incredibly reliable and steadfast in her endeavors. She embodies the essence of leadership by not only excelling in leadership roles but also demonstrating humility and approachability as a follower. Saffron's ability to lead and follow with grace and conviction truly sets her apart.
  2. Tara Hayman is the President of the National Society of Leadership and Success, whose leadership led the chapter to great success. Volunteering in the community to package food or collect clothing/household goods for unhoused mothers and children are important to her life. She has been a keynote speaker on topics related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. Her efforts have made strives for all people to be visible and valued.
  3. Shaniqua Hopkins is a hardworking single mother of seven whose passions led her to opening her own non-profit, 7th Dream Helping Hearts, a non-profit dedicated to aiding single-moms to eliminate barriers and worries. She mentors these moms from a place of understanding and hope. “I am all about the community,” Shaniqua stated and her words are evident in her actions. She has led educational seminars and provided guidance and assistance to mothers and children across the valley, directly impacting her community for the better. Her impact can be felt for generations.

Saffron, Tara and Shaniqua have all worked tirelessly to combat hunger, homelessness, barriers and lack of student engagement. They have given guidance, support, resources and time –all for the benefit of their community. They are mothers, daughters, spouses, friends and colleagues all while being a Rio Salado student. All of these students are creating a community that feels like home and provides our neighbors experiencing hardships to feel a sense of comfort, security and hope for the future.

Congratulations to Saffron, Tara and Shaniqua for their unwavering dedication to civic engagement, service and leadership. We thank you.
