Dr. Patricia Hernandez, Rio Salado College’s Faculty Chair for Addiction Studies and Behavioral Science, has received the 2024 Community Circle Award from the Arizona Association of Addiction Professionals (AAAP).
The award was given in recognition of Hernandez’s work, and specifically cited her tireless efforts in the passage of Arizona Senate Bill 1062.
“I am honored and flattered to be recognized,” Hernandez said. “The process to get an appointment with a legislator to be heard, and then a bill drafted and through all of the committees and chambers was a rewarding learning experience.”
The bill expands the practice of substance abuse counseling to include treatment for all forms of addiction that are a persistent, compulsive dependence on a behavior or substance.
The language in the bill highlights a change the AAAP recommended to how counselors are referred to. The wording changed from “substance abuse counselor” to “addiction counselor.”
Hernandez said the group advocated for the change because “substance abuse” is an outdated and stigmatizing term, and “chemical dependency” is not accurate when defining addiction.
The award also noted Hernandez’s work in the certification of new addiction professionals through scholarship programs.
In 2023, the Maricopa Community Colleges introduced scholarships from the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS)* available to Rio Salado students in the college’s addiction programs.
Hernandez oversaw the scholarship program, which was designed to increase and enhance career development, education, and training opportunities for students.
"Our society is in dire need of dedicated behavioral health providers who can make a lasting impact on individuals' lives,” Hernandez said. “As the need for skilled healthcare professionals continues to grow, an opportunity is emerging for students who aspire to master the necessary skills and embark on a journey of education and impact.”
Students interested in starting that journey of education can look to Rio Salado College, where the addictions program features online classes, affordable tuition and skilled teachers.
“Rio’s programs are designed to meet state licensure and national accreditation standards,” Hernandez said. “Students participate in practicum and provide services to clients under the direct supervision of a licensed professional. Lastly, our adjuncts are all licensed, working professionals who know the skills needed to be successful.”
