Scrabble tiles that spell out LGBTQ+

June is Pride Month! Each year we dedicate this summer month to celebrate and honor the rich history, culture, and community of LGBTQ+ Americans. Pride takes place in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Riots in which patrons of a gay club in New York City rose up and defended themselves against police repression, resulting in a six-day long clash with law enforcement that sparked the creation of the modern gay rights movement.

At Rio Salado College, we take great pride in all our queer community members. If you’re looking to learn more about the achievements of the LGBTQ+ community and want to find out how you can show your pride year-round, check out our upcoming event and the resources on offer from the Rio library.

Learn More About Pride Month

Our library staff have put together an informative guide about Pride Month. Learn about gay history, pronouns, demographic data, and common myths and misconceptions about the LGBTQ+ community. The guide also features a breakdown of the different groups under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, so if you want to know what being Pansexual or Questioning means our guide has got you covered. The library guide also includes links to documentaries, a featured list of eBooks, and access to research databases about gay history and culture.

Standing Together: Creating an Inclusive Environment for LGBTQ+  Community

Join us for "Standing Together: Creating an Inclusive Environment for LGBTQ+ Community," hosted by Rio Salado College 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 26 in the Yellow/Brown Room on the first floor of the Conference Center. President Kate Smith will welcome attendees before introducing our guest speaker, Ally Snow.

Ally is a fervent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights with more than 15 years of experience across education, social services, and holistic wellness. She plays a crucial role in Equality Maricopa and the Women’s Networking Group at Rio Salado College, where she champions Diversity, Education, Inclusion, and Belonging initiatives. During her presentation, Ally will discuss effective strategies for fostering LGBTQ+ inclusivity in higher education and beyond.

The event will conclude with a Q&A session, giving participants a chance to engage directly with Ally and explore deeper insights into creating supportive environments. Join us in promoting a culture where every employee feels valued and included.

This event is proudly presented by Rio Salado's DEIB Council, committed to advancing a culture of inclusivity and recognition of diversity in all its forms.
