Asian American Pacific Islander Month

Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders have played in our collective history. The annual celebration takes place in May to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843. May was also chosen to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad (whose tracks were laid down by Chinese immigrants) on May 10, 1869.

At Rio Salado College we’re proud of all our AAPI students, faculty, staff, and community members. If you’re looking for ways to expand your cultural horizons and celebrate this special occasion, take a look at our library guide and RSVP to our upcoming AAPI virtual event.

Let’s Go to The Library

Want to learn more about AAPI Month? Our library staff have put together a detailed and informative guide for the occasion. The AAPI guide offers book recommendations, a breakdown of important AAPI historical and cultural achievements, an article about the impact of climate change on Asian and Pacific Islander countries, short films, a spotlight on artist Susan Chen, and information about two local affinity groups (Arizona AANHPI for Equity and the MCCCD Asian Pacific Islander Affinity Group).
