More than 240 runners and walkers gathered earlier this month at Tempe’s Kiwanis Park for a tradition that’s part workout, part community celebration, and all heart. The 7th annual Dash with Splash took place on Saturday, April 5, drawing a record-breaking 280 registrants, both in-person and virtual.

Participants laced up their sneakers for a cause that keeps students on track. Every registration supported the Jo C. Bennett Student Assistance Fund— a faculty-created fund for Rio Salado College students facing emergency financial hardships. The event raised more than $3,800 to support the fund.

“Our community showed up. Every step brought more support and more success for our students,” Rio Salado College President Kate Smith said. “With these contributions, we will be able to help students stay on track, stay in school and complete their programs.”

City of Tempe, Cizek Share Their Support

The day began with President Kate Smith warmly welcoming attendees and recognizing the volunteers and staff who make the event possible. She then introduced event sponsor Cizek Associates, a Valley-based executive search consulting firm.

The stage was then set for a special moment as President Sheila Lehker joined the welcome, followed by Tempe Mayor Corey Woods.

“I really appreciate everything Rio Salado College does for all of our young people and all the people looking to get an education in our community. It’s really a critical need. It’s one of the reasons why we are able to attract such incredible businesses here in the City of Tempe,” Woods told the participants.

The day included the public debut of a newly designed Splash, Rio Salado’s enthusiastic mascot. With high-fives, dance moves, and plenty of photo ops, Splash brought smiles to kids and grown-ups alike.

Rio Salado would like to thank everyone for their support of students and participation in this year’s event.
