Three students who received Fall 2024 Rio Salado College scholarships shared how the scholarships are helping them pay for school and reach their academic goals.
Kelsi Barker - Thor Family Endowed Scholarship
Kelsi Barker is currently pursuing an associate degree in psychology at Rio Salado while raising her three children as a single mother and working full-time.
“This scholarship opportunity means so much to me,” Barker said. “As a single mom trying to obtain a degree to start a career, it helps to have some assistance with extra expenses that won't add to the stress monthly bills.”
Barker is grateful to receive financial assistance to use for her education.
“I am very passionate about finishing my degree and continuing my education,” Barker said. “When I graduate, I look forward to showing my kids I was able to accomplish my goals and that in life, you can do anything you put your mind to.”
Barker is on track to complete her associate degree this spring, and plans on continuing to pursue a bachelor’s degree and become a licensed therapist.
“I am very passionate about mental health and working with children,” Barker said. “I grew up seeing many people deal with mental health and trauma that affected them in their daily lives. I want to pursue a career in therapy to be able to help people recognize these traumas and the importance of mental health.”
Darren Lim - Hazel Davis Literacy Legacy Scholarship
As a computer science student, Darren Lim enjoys the convenience of taking online classes.
“I am currently attending Rio Salado College because of the flexibility of online classes, which allows me to balance my studies with other commitments,” Lim said.
Lim applied for a scholarship to help with his educational expenses.
“Currently, some unexpected circumstances have strained my financial situation, making it challenging to meet the rising costs of tuition, books, and living expenses,” Lim said. “Receiving this scholarship has made it easier for me to focus on my studies without the constant worry about finances.”
Now that he can focus on his studies, Lim is excelling in his classes.
“Throughout my academic career, I have worked hard to maintain a high GPA while taking challenging courses,” Lim said. “I have a strong foundation in basic programming, and I am eager to continue building on this knowledge.”
Lim’s goal is to transfer to Arizona State University and continue his studies and ultimately become a software engineer.
“I want to specialize in artificial intelligence and machine learning,” he said. “I am passionate about this field because of its potential to drive innovation and make a positive impact on society.”
Alyssa Maldonado - Dr. Harry E. Whyte Memorial Scholarship
As a student in Rio Salado’s dental hygiene program, Alyssa Maldonado used her fall 2024 scholarship award to apply toward her state board exams last November.
“Last year, I was unable to work while going to school because the dental hygiene program is full time and all day long,” Maldonado said. “My financial need was great because I had not received any money since my teaching contract ended last May. Receiving a scholarship allowed me to finish my career while also providing for my daughter as a single mother.”
Maldonado is looking forward to helping her future patients with their dental health care.
“I chose this major since the first feature I notice on a person is their smile,” Maldonado said. “I know this career is perfect for me since I am a perfectionist and will make sure my patient's needs are met.”
She plans on working in a pediatric dental office.
“I plan to stay in Arizona after graduating and work at a pediatric office,” Maldonado said. “My educational goal is to be a registered dental hygienist by December 2024 and then have a stable career and provide valuable care to my patients.”
Information about the Fall 2025 application deadline will be available, along with the application, on the Maricopa Community College District Foundation website.
